Hiring Challenges

In 2015, ThoughtWorks faced challenges in hiring as they had several openings in India for experienced technical roles such as application developers, big data engineers, data scientists, UI developers etc.

Conventional candidate assessment methodology

After sourcing the candidate profiles, the applicants were screened and assessed based on the conventional methods i.e. recruiter scans through each profile individually and hiring managers need to assess shortlisted candidates
thoroughly during the interview stages. Evaluating candidates’ technical prowess to identify those with real-time skills, in addition to theoretical knowledge, took a lot of time.

Hiring candidates who are the right cultural fit

ThoughtWorks needed to find the right candidates for the job, who fit in with the organisational culture and the role, so that they can reduce the joining drop-outs and increase the candidate productivity and the methods they were using became arduous.

High cost-per-hire due to time spent on screening and interviewing candidates

Screening candidates at various stages resulted in loss of time and further utilized the precious time of hiring managers, while they could have engaged in any other productive revenue-generating work. With lot of time and effort spent on assessment, ThoughtWorks started to see an increase in cost-per-hire.

How EYardstick helped

In effort to streamline their hiring process, Thought-Works chose EYardstick. EYardstick’s 360-degree assessment served to be the key and a holistic solution to ThoughtWorks which helped them assess candidates on various levels.

Online assessments with coding platform

Thoughtworks used EYardstick to conduct online technical assessments and coding tests for about 1000 applicants to test their knowledge as well as their skill in real-time application. The technical/coding tests helped to assess candidates on their capabilities in 8 programming languages which are Java, C, CPP, PHP, PERL, PYTHON, C#, RUBY etc.

In-Depth Performance Reports

In addition to shortlisting, the detailed performance reports highlighted candidates’ thought process and how efficient their coding skills were. It gave an opportunity for hiring managers to better judge the candidates in the interview stage by identifying the best performers and understanding the candidates’ key skills and weaknesses with EYardstick’s in-depth reports.

Personality Tests

Furthermore, EYardstick’s personality tests which were tailor-made for lateral hiring helped ThoughtWorks to assess candidates’ critical and strategic thinking and understand their behavioural dimensions to determine the right cultural fit. The psychometric tests which provided insights into the candidates’ behavioural aspects helped improve the training plan, which in-turn led to better team work, dynamics and higher productivity.

The EYardstick Impact

By using EYardstick’s advanced technical tests, 370 out of 1000 candidates were shortlisted in the initial rounds. Hiring managers, instead of having to evaluate the skills of 800-100 candidates efficiently, now needed to interview only 370. Moreover, personality tests helped them to shorten the number even further, resulting in hiring of those who are best fit for the organisation.

ThoughtWorks not only saved cost and time through using EYardstick’s online assessments but also managed to create robust engagement that reduced their overall cost-per-hire and improved efficiency of the recruitment process that fuelled growth and took their company to greater heights.
